Words Matter: Pay Attention

Words and Their Meaning Matter

Sponsored by CrisDental Eugene

Words matter to me.

Perhaps that’s because I lived most of my life using them as a journalist.

I remember, years ago, at a press conference asking a feminist why she preferred to be called a woman rather than a lady or female.

She gave her answer to which I replied, you know the definition of woman is literally “from man, right?”

It didn’t make sense to me.

Females don’t need men and at that time were trying to have women’s rights and yet wanted to be called “from man.”

The term environmentalist is another one that has me puzzled.

These so called “environmentalist” say they want clean air, clean water and less carbon and claim to follow science.

Yet, they fight the science, lock up timber thinning projects that would protect the forest from burning, hence protecting the environment.

Their “protection” is actually polluting the air, destroying the forests they claim to love, polluting our water and destroying the forests.

Huh, does that make sense to you?

We hear one party claiming the other will destroy democracy when that parties actions with the presidential election do exactly what they claim they are fighting. They scream over January 6th and yet did nothing when BLM rioters destroyed public and private property, a lot more. Both are wrong but for some reason one got excused.

Then there’s pro life and pro choice. These are just pretty terms to cover up and make both sides of the debate sound more tolerant, less harsh.

I had a news director once who said no more.

He said the issue is not really life or choice but abortion.

The people in the newsroom went nuts.

We’d fallen for the whitewashing of the subject and were calling people what they wanted us to call them rather than defining what the issue really was about…..abortion.

From that day forward he wanted reporters to use pro abortion or anti abortion.

As we get closer to the election remember the meaning of words.

Look for consistency in candidates.

Often times when someone accuses one side of something it’s because they are doing the same thing just in a different way.

It’s not our job to go along to get along.

We’ve been doing that too long and look where we are.

Pay close attention to the meaning of words.

Look for consistency or the lack there of.

And if something doesn’t feel right, do you homework because you are probably onto something.
