No One Should Be Alone
There’s a group of guys, me included, who always seem to end up in the same end of the locker room at the gym. Over the last couple of years flipping eat other crap has become the norm.
The other day, one of the regulars, looked pretty down. We started talking and come to find out his wife’s cancer is causing her all kinds of problems.
You could see the pain in his eyes, the heaviness so thick you could cut it with a knife.
We started talking about it, when another usual came up and started listening. He, like me, is also a caner survivor. The whole world seemed to stop, the clock didn’t move, it was just three guys talking about something so terrible but yet the fact that we were talking about it was almost joyous.
I kept feeling this nudge from God to hug the guy but dude, we’re in the locker room and hugging another man is defiantly not something done in such intimate surroundings.
Finally I couldn’t stop myself any longer. I”m not sure what this guys connection to God is or if he even has one, not my business. But I turned to him and said tomorrow (when his wife was going in for a surgery) I will be praying and thinking about you.
I reached over to shake his hand and pulled him in tight for a huge. Then the other guy followed suit. Kindness, compassion and concern, when real, is connective and contagious.
I turned to walk away and I saw a tear in his eye. Then he said to us, that really helps you guys, thank you for listening.
There’s a lot of people in pain right now. Fear is out to devour anyone who is not mentally and physically prepared for what’s ahead.
God keep that part of me tender so, yes I can still be a warrior when needed but a tender warrior when someone near me needs a hug.
