I thought I was going to change my name to Job last week. Thru circumstances that are completely out of my control, all income from my business has ceased in May and hadn't been very good previous 6 months. Have been going thru some great times reading and praying and some really dark days, luckily the landlord has been extremely gracious but we are out of time, eviction, truck repo and loss of phone are near. Last week I was doing a study on Job, thru different commentaries. And the thing that hit me was, here was a righteous man, one who pleased God but God served him up on a platter because He knew his man would take it all and still love Him. Job says "I came in with nothing ans I'm going out with nothing". Right there I quit striving and have been at peace. God knows what we can handle way better than we do but our soul man is a baby and doesn't like not having its own way. If He wants me to move (daughter has a spare room, blessings on that) and if I live there we don't really need 2 vehicles and I remember when we lived w/out cell phones, "then" He will be able to work and get all the Glory, Zec. 6.

As a person who takes worrying to levels most people can't even imagine, I have recently been trying, trying to reverse this mindset. Of all times, I am trying this in an economy that breeds worry in even non-worriers, it seems impossible to me. I read recently a quote " I know god can help me, but help me god until you help me". It seems I have worrying down to a science with 47 years experience!

Don't worry about answering my rhetorical questions. That is just a taste of my own medicine.

I usually avoid talking about scripture because, being a secularist, I view everything from a secular perspective, where any writing can be evaluated outside of the writing. But when I cannot find a secular perspective to scripture, my thoughts finally end up going back to the scripture. And yes, that tends to lead to the same answer you gave me.

Ben, I am not being judgmental when I say this so please don't take it that way. I think what you are missing is the "F" word....Faith.

That's not a criticism, simply an observation but I sure appreciate you comments and thoughts.

The bird's action to get more food is an instinctual response rather than an emotional response. The bird's instinctual response is tied up in the physiological present: raw sensation. Fretting refers to a focus on psychological representations far removed from direct sense. That is when feelings turn into emotions, or mental responses to feelings.

The problem is not that we have mental responses to feelings. It is that the underlying sensations are physiological stimuli, and the underlying change needed to address a physiological stimulus is a change in the physiological conditions which led to that stimulus. The mental, psychological response must manifest that physiological change.

Fretting is not necessarily bad when it leads us to new, clever ways to affect our physiological conditions, unlike the bird, who cannot do more than he is instinctually prepared to do. For example, we don't need to adapt to an environment over thousands of years, or move to a different environment. We are capable of making our own environment suitable to our own needs. We can even make the void of space suit our own needs, but it takes a lot of fretting.

Of course, the passage Oswald is referring to, Psalm 37:8, indicates that the problem is that we even have our own needs, and that the only needs which should be satisfied are God's needs. The passages say not to fret because God will provide what he has determined that we actually need for this life, so that we can focus on the next life.

But it does seem kind of odd for me that we would be created with this unique ability to provide for ourselves, and be advised by our creator not to bother ourselves too much with this ability. Although birds don't worry about where they will get their next bite to eat, they also do not please Him the way we can, yet His advice for us is to be more like the unpleasing birds. What am I missing?
