What is so different about today?
Too many of us are stuck in a pattern. We get up in the morning, do the same thing over and over again and call it life.
What would happen if today you tried something a little different? At first it’s not easy. Your pattern is pushed and the rest of the day seems a bit off.
But if you and I are writing the story of our lives, with God’s help, why are we so impressed with the character we’ve created?
Yesterday I stepped out of my gym routine to go with a friend to Dexter Lake to try my hands at rowing. I’d like to say I was the greatest, I caught on quickly and it was a breeze. That’s what I’d like to say but it’s not true.
I didn’t look all that good at this new sport. My friend was helpful but the whole time I felt like I was keeping him from his workout. He didn’t make me feel like that I made me feel like that. The point is I did it, I like it and I’ll probably go do it again. My routine broke and I saw something different about me.
The other day I spoke at a church and read one of my favorite lines from a book by Portland Author Donald Miller.
“I want to keep my soul fertile for the changes, so things keep getting born in me, so things keep dying when it is time for things to die. I want to keep walking away from the person I was a moment ago, because a mind was made to figure things out, not to read the same page recurrently. Only the good stories have the characters different at the end than they were at the beginning.”
Go try something different today. Be an interesting character. Don’t allow your story to look the same at the end as it did at the beginning. I don’t want to be the same person today that I was tomorrow.
It may be time to leave….something.
