To be Trapped is to be Free

I recently interviewed a guy who said something that shocked, amazed and got me thinking.

Matt, recently found out that a woman was having his baby. The child’s mother is not able to care for the little girl, so Matt was faced with the decision of walking away, or giving up his life for a while, moving to Oregon, and fighting for custody of his daughter.

During our interview Matt said; “You know there’s freedom in being trapped.” At that moment the world stopped just for a second. I felt it. I think that happens every time a bit of God-given wisdom passes the Father’s hand and is released from one of His children’s lips.

Cancer is form of a trap. You can’t just ignore it. You can’t wish it away. You can’t give it to someone else and you can’t pretend cancer doesn’t want to kill you. But somehow, in the midst of cancer, I feel freer than I did before the diagnosis. Don’t get me wrong, I hate cancer, I don’t want to have cancer; if anyone would like to have it instead of me I’ll give it away. But the results of what this has done to my life, the vision it has given me are amazing. The tenderness it’s created in my spirit, I will not trade for anything in the world. Unfortunately the two cannot be separated so I’m trapped……and very, very free.

If you’d like to see Matt’s interview he’s in a story I did on “Birth To Three.” I’ll post it with this blog.
