Showroom Christianity-No Thanks
Someone said to me recently what a great testimony my life would be to God’s power if He heals me of Prostate Cancer. Something about that statement rubs me the wrong way.
In fact, it really irritates me. These folks believe that I need to be healed so that God’s power can be shown in a bigger way. They said to me “Think of the testimony you will have.” What am I a TV Movie of the week? I already have a wonderful story and I don’t get to decide how it turns out. Now, that’s a walk of faith. The big stories, in the Kingdom of God are the little ones. The real miracles are the ones that happen in the middle of the night when God shows me something I’ve been waiting my whole life to see. Those stories probably won’t make it to the big screen. My story will probably never be made in 3-D and much of it would probably end up on the cutting room floor. Oh well.
Is abandonment to God filled with expectation? If it is it is not abandonment. Have we as believers created Commercial Christianity and masked our self-interest as serving God? Do we think the more we do, the better we look, the more use we are to God? What if use isn’t what He wants? What if what we are really seeking is to be someone in the Kingdom of God?
I find the less I am, the more I am. I find those in this world who seem to have little, actually have it all. Value is not how great my story is it’s how much I’m willing to abandon myself to God and love His people (all of them). I don’t need some headline healing for that to happen. I simply need to wake up daily, kill my self-interest, and allow God to work through me.
Does this mean I do not want a miraculous healing? No, I’d love that. But what it means is I’m okay leaving that to God and instead focusing on the next moment or the one that just passed.
Showroom Christianity? No thanks.
