Maxwell Ranch: Haines, Oregon
There’s a great article that appeared in the Oregonian Newspaper on the Maxwell Ranch in Haines, Oregon. It’s called “Bound by more than a ranch”. It was in the paper on May the 11th. The Maxwell’s in the article are my great grandparents. The original farm house is still there. My mother is a Maxwell and many of the people talked about in the article I knew, or at least remember. I did not know my great grandparents but have heard many stories over the years. The cool thing about the article is that I had never heard this story before. We’ll try to get a link to it but for now, if you want to read it, just google Oregon live and write in Maxwell ranch.

Mom sent me a copy (with pictures) and when I tried the first time, the site wanted me to pay for the article. I searched a bit and was able to get in without having to pay after all. (Determination and the Scottish Maxwell background?) I did download it to a document and saved it. There were some things I had never heard before either! I didn’t know that Nancy was the one who bought the water rights or that they had been possibly living under the bridge. However, I do remember Belva telling us that they had not known for sure when the present house was built but had found the date up in the attic – 1892, which is a bit earlier than the article stated.
Hi Rick, this is Tom Moore, Rose’s Tom from Union, I am so excited about you running for Secretary of State, you will do an awesome job. I would love to see this article on the Ranch, in fact this is how I found your site trying to find a link to the ranch. If you want more information on the Ranch I would suggest contacting my mom, Rose Moore, as she spent most of her young life on the Ranch and knows what all Nancy Maxwell had to go through to maintain the ranch when she was left alone. In fact I think the Oregonian interviewed her a few weeks ago about the family and the ranch.
Rick, good luck to you and God bless.
Rick, just a message to urge you to put my beloved hometown on your tour of visits and door knocking etc. across Oregon . Lincoln City is the town and it’s the kind of place you can leave your door unlocked. Much of it is summer cabins but you should give the News Guard(Lincoln City’s local paper)a call and talk there or something(they have the beloved Dorchester House there that hosts the conferences). Put them on your list if you can.
