Pier 101: Its Deep Fried but it’s a Veggie?

Jan 3, 2012   //   by Rick Dancer   //   Blog, Destinations  //  No Comments

PIER 101

It’s pretty fun to get to go back and revisit a fond memory and that is just what we got to do this past Thanksgiving weekend. Pier 101 in Lincoln City has long been our favorite place to eat deep-fried Zucchini. Now this may not sound so exciting to some but once you’ve experienced them, you’ll know what I’m talking about.

Pier 101 has been in Lincoln City since 1972, now that has to say something with so many businesses’ closing. The atmosphere is rustic warmth, with lots of wood, two wood burning fireplaces, one in main dining room, one in bar.

Back to these amazing zucchini, they aren’t your average small chips, oh no we’re talking big planks, almost like eating fish. They come with Thousand Island dressing and Ranch for dipping. Add a small salad and you have a great lunch.

Next time you’re taking the long drive through Lincoln City, drop in Pier 101, you’ll be glad you did!

This Friday/Saturday Night: The Place to Be is Creswell Coffee

Dec 8, 2011   //   by Rick Dancer   //   Destinations  //  No Comments

I’m tell you for a little town Creswell coffee really knows how to bring in the entertainment. Here’s what’s happening this weekend. Seth, the owner sent me this note about the weekend events. He linked it up with some video of the groups performing this weekend. If you don’t have plans, make some. If you do have plans that don’t include Creswell Coffee, change them. (Smile)

Friday night, we are pleased to bring back, for the first time since our Anniversary Party, Betty & The Boy.  What has Betty and her band been up to since July 2nd?  Well to start, they got offered the opportunity to play Art in the Vineyard.  They’ve also gained significant air time on KLCC radio, and to top it all off, they were recently named Eugene Weekly’s Next Big Thing.  That’s quite an accomplishment for a band that doesn’t really fit into any genre, and who’s music isn’t the “get up and dance” kind.  I can’t really say much to define their sound, except to say that Betty’s voice backed by guitar, banjo, mandolin, and violin is a mesmerizing sound.  Listen to this video to see what I’m talking about.

Come down Saturday afternoon at 3pm for Creswell Coffee’s first-ever Movie Showing.  Courtesy of Yaakov, our local nutritionist, we have the opportunity to show “Scientists Under Attack” – A documentary thriller about how Agro-Chemical multinational corporation Monsanto victimizes international scientists to prevent them from publishing their findings in regards to Genetically Modified Crops.  If you eat produce, this movie applies to you and may be worth checking out.  This is a FREE event.

On the opposite spectrum of Betty & the Boy, we have Saturday’s entertainment, Kokobola.  Jazz meets Surf-Rock, Kokobola is best described as an electrifying display of instrumental groove music.  See what I mean here.

One last thing, Mark your Calendars to spend Dec. 31st here at Creswell Coffee.  From 7 to 9pm we’re ringing in the new year with The Dick Danger Band.

Lunch Anyone: Cornish Meat/Veggie Pies WOW

Dec 5, 2011   //   by Rick Dancer   //   Destinations, For Business  //  No Comments

Palace Bakery in Eugene and Full City (owned by the same people) make some of the greatest treats for lunch. If you haven’t had one of their Cornish Meat/Veggie Pies you are missing out. The other day Veronica, the head baker, invited me into the kitchen to shoot a little video and sample some food. When someone offers to let me sample food, i’m in. They have the pies at both locations in town so try one for lunch sometime. Yum.

Beach Pictures

It looks to be a beautiful day on the Oregon Coast. Yesterday (T-Day) it poured down rain and the wind was whipping up a storm like you can’t believe. By sunset the skies were clear and all was good. We found a couple of new, amazing beer selections at the Pelican Pub. I’ve decided this is my favorite beer ( Wee Heavy and Bad Santa). We’re headed on a run with my son Jess, his girlfriend, their family and some friends and tonight another dinner with them. In an hour or so we do our first ever Pacific City Turkey Trot and then who knows. I gotta go it’s just beautiful out there right now.

Cottage Grove Covered Bridge Dedication

Nov 20, 2011   //   by Rick Dancer   //   Destinations  //  No Comments

Cottage Grove is the covered bridge capital of Oregon and on December 3rd you can be part of an amazing day.

The city just finished renovating the oldest covered railroad bridge west of the Mississippi. The Chambers covered railroad bridge dedication is December 3rd from 2:30 to 4.

The entire town will be there and you don’t want to miss this.

The new bridge is bike and pedestrian friendly and is sure to become a centerpiece in an already beautiful town.

The celebration is as 960 South River Road in Cottage Grove. For those unfamiliar with the area just drive all the way down Main Street, take a right at the light just past the little covered bridge west of city hall, and take a left you can’t miss it.

Or, you can just stop by any business and ask.

Go early and have lunch at Fleur De Lis. There is a French pastry chef who is actually from France and makes great food.

Stay late and stop by the Axe and Fiddle for a beer, a burger and live music.

Now That’s Great Mexican Food

Nov 19, 2011   //   by Rick Dancer   //   Destinations  //  2 Comments

We found a Mexican Food Restaurant the other night that is simply amazing.

The Ranchito Mexican Grill off Mohawk Blvd in Springfield was a great surprise.

We don’t’ go out for Mexican Food a lot because, to us, a lot of it tastes the same. But the Ranchito Mexican Grill changed our tune.

A kid I workout next to on one of the machines at the gym is the son of the owner. Somehow it came up that his dad owned Ranchito Mexican Grill so we decided to try it.

Plus, we found a coupon for 7$ off a meal in the Savvy Saver Springfield Edition.

Kathy and Jess had Super Burrito’s and loved them. My wife is very picky when it comes to Mexican food and she was raving about it. Everything tastes fresh and distinct. It wasn’t like eating a plate filled with mushy beans and overcooked rice.

The tortillas are homemade and you can taste the difference.

I had a grilled chicken breast that had a lot of flavor and it came will all sorts of things, including those homemade tortillas so I could make little burrito’s.

From the outside the place looks clean and nice but not special. It’s not a place I would venture into at a glance but once inside it’s very nice with booths and cool lighting.

The servers are great the only thing I would change is they have some metal chairs that need to be upgraded to something a little nicer. We just sat in a booth and it was great.

The Ranchito Grill is something you really need to try. The prices are great and right now they have a coupon in the Savvy Saver for one meal free if you buy one.
