And Justice for All? Maybe Not.

What if life is not about fighting for a cause, for change or in finding Justice for all? If this is true I need to climb off this merry-go-round I’ve been riding.IMG_2257
Does this mean causes, fighting for change and being just are bad things? No, it’s all about focus. Hold on before you jump all over me read what Oswald Chambers has to say this morning. This is simply a portion of his writing for today but it’s the portion that means the most to me.
“Never look for right in the other man, but never cease to be right yourself. (This means being righteous, not self-righteous) We are always looking for justice; the Sermon on the Mount is-never, look for justice, but never cease to live it.”
I knew a man who said life wasn’t fair. He spent much of his life fighting for fairness for others. I think his fight was not really about fairness for others but trying to find fairness for himself. I believe his fight, deep down, was about fighting to be understood.
Perhaps his life would have been better spent not trying to be understood but realizing he was on the road to humility and eventually freedom.
If you look at the life of Jesus this is what He did. He was outspoken about how people should be treated. His ideas of “Turn the other cheek” were radical and rejected by most. But His greatest example had nothing to do with acceptance or popularity of His ideas or some cause. His greatest example was in living a just and righteous life.
Fairness and Justice are righteous goals. But in our attempt to change the world we may end up failing to realize the very thing we are trying to bring to the world. I wonder that instead of making justice and fairness a cause we should simply try to live that way…..even if the world around us never notices.
