Against the Current

There I am, swimming in a river, going the wrong direction. All around me swimmers go with the flow but I refuse to join them, knowing they are headed for disaster.

Just writing that last sentence makes me an outcast, as some will use it to rip me apart as if I think I know more than they do.

I remember when good was good and bad was bad. Now they tend to blend together. I remember when the lines and borders were a little darker but now it seems those lines are imaginary and everyone is equipped with magic markers and an eraser.

We have become a nation on attack. We wait for someone to offer a position and then look for ways to sabotage their plans by ripping them to shreds.

I am a guy of faith. I believe God is in charge but question the way “Christians” manipulate His will. I believe in black and white and shades of gray.

We, the creation, do not know more than the creator and yet we think we do. We do not define words; they come with a definition attached. I watch as our culture tries to recreate what has already been created and it troubles me.

I can find no way to wrap up this blog but to repeat the words I heard an African American Maid in the movie “The Help” say to a young white girl she was raising.

She repeated the same sentence over and over to this little girl as the world swirled out of control. She’d say: “you are good, you are kind you are important.”

Perhaps its’ time we reject how current culture defines real and go back to the creator to see what He thinks.

  • Excellent point! It’s traditional values that are being attacked. Some say if we’re not progressive in these views that we’re living in the past…not true. All of us need a foundatio to build upon. If we keep changing to the new way of thinking our principle foundation will surely crumble into soft sand and not withstand the weight of changing values.

  • Holy Cow… Going against the flow seems to be the message God is wanting to get out there this morning. I think He desperately wants us to get outside the proverbial BOX. Get out into the places society doesn’t see . This Parable woke me up this morning:

Many guests were invited, and when the banquet was ready, he sent his servants to notify everyone that it was time to come. But they all refused! So he sent other servants to tell them, ‘The feast has been prepared, and choice meats have been cooked. Everything is ready. Hurry!’ But the guests he had invited ignored them and went about their business, one to his farm, another to his store. Others seized his messengers and treated them shamefully, even killing some of them. “Then the king became furious. He sent out his army to destroy the murderers and burn their city. And he said to his servants, ‘The wedding feast is ready, and the guests I invited aren’t worthy of the honor. Now go out to the street corners and invite everyone you see.’ “So the servants brought in everyone they could find, good and bad alike, and the banquet hall was filled with guests. But when the king came in to meet the guests, he noticed a man who wasn’t wearing the proper clothes for a wedding. ‘Friend,’ he asked, ‘how is it that you are here without wedding clothes?’ And the man had no reply. Then the king said to his aides, ‘Bind him hand and foot and throw him out into the outer darkness, where there is weeping and gnashing of teeth.’ For many are called, but few are chosen.”"(Mat 22:3-14 NLT)
